do the wobble
When I teach any kind of physical balance pose or move, I often say, “Enjoy the wobble!”
A little wobble is what you want, because it means you are challenging yourself.
Challenging yourself enough to throw you off balance.
Challenging yourself enough to notice how and why you’re losing balance so that you can practice bringing yourself back to balance over and over again.
Challenging yourself enough to make “mistakes” and let go of the self-consciousness that arises when we try to do things perfectly.
There’s no wobbling in Yin Yoga because we practice relaxing and yielding into gravity as we become still. That’s why I like to sprinkle some balance practice in my Yin Yoga classes and enjoy a little movement and wobble for some contrast.
I think it’s an important practice because there are times in our daily life when we physically lose balance. I often trip over nothing and when I am able to catch my balance and not fall to the ground, I am glad I practice my wobble.
So I recommend that you practice some balancing and wobbling on a Yoga mat so that you can even practice falling gracefully to the floor.
Of course you don’t want to hurt yourself, but a little wobble and a tumble to the floor is fun!
