non-self-help books
I might say and think the motto “too much of a good thing is bad” too much, but I think it is a good way for me to always check in how imbalanced or hardheaded I might be.
Over ten years ago, ever since I read the book “The power of now” and discovered the power of self-help books, I became addicted to reading self-help books. I felt the need to get all the help I can get in all different elements explained in all different ways. I’d like to think that the amount of self-help books I’ve read has directly accumulated to how they’ve actually helped me and how much I’ve grown in the ways I want to…..
When my marriage was not going well I read many relationship self-help books but I think I ended up making it worse by pushing my self-help methods onto him. Duh. It’s called self-help because you’re improving YOURSELF and not the people around you. Oddly enough, it took a while for me to learn this lesson.
Obviously, I still have a lot more improving to do but I recently noticed that I can probably improve myself by reading less self-help books and read more books just for fun, entertainment and a sprinkle of education. The balance of allowing my mind to be transported to the author’s world and story rather than focusing on the areas I need to improve feels very healthy to me.
So, I’ve read two books for pure entertainment so far this year and I’m onto this third book my yoga wife sent me as a gift. (Thanks Stacie!) If anyone has book recommendations please let me know! (okay if you want to recommend self-help books too 😉)
