Fitbit, take a hike
Taking a nice walk is one of the main activities during this coronacation period. The other day I went for a hike overlooking the beautiful ocean and while I was peacefully enjoying the walk and scenery… I heard a very annoying sound… the sound of a Fitbit of the person I was hiking with. Every few minutes this device informed him how many miles he had walked, how many calories he had burned, whateverwhatever. I was doing my best to not let this annoying sound annoy me.
I understand how valuable it is to have precise information from these devices so that you can track your exercises and receive information about your body. I recently saw an advertisement for a device that tells you that you’ve been hunched over too long so that it reminds you to sit up straighter…
Like my teacher always says, too much of a good thing is bad. I think we can definitely use these devices to inform us, but I think it would be great to also take the time to notice what our bodies are actually experiencing. Actually set some time to deliberately practice feeling what your body is feeling… Not with that annoying sound but from an internal voice only you can hear. I personally think Yin Yoga is the perfect time for this.
What if the device and your body disagree? Which one will you listen to?
